  • IIMC, Dhenkanal celebrates World Photography Day

    Dhenkanal, August 19:

Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal celebrated the World Photography Day with a photography completion on Monday. On this day, 174 years ago, the French government had declared Daguerreotype as a ‘gift free to the world’.
The theme for this year’s competition was ‘Rain’.
The day was marked by a presentation by Dr Mrinal Chatterjee, Head of IIMC, Dhenkanal, on the subject of Photojournalism. He outlined the history of Photography from its primitive years to its manifestation as a form of Journalism.
Dr Chatterjee told students the difference between Photography and Photojournalism. “While the former entertains through eye sight, the latter focuses on timeliness, objective, and narration,” he said.
The art and craft of photojournalism has undergone various changes ever since the invention of the Daguerreotype in 1839. Now anyone can claim to be a photographer. Thus making the job of a photojournalist more challenging as he has to be more alert about the happenings in his surroundings.
“A photojournalist has to be sensitive as well as insensitive to his surroundings. He has to find a balance between his senses and the truth of the outside world. Then only he can do his job efficiently,” said Dr Chatterjee.
Afterwards, Photographs shortlisted by the judges were screened. Smaranika, Odia Journalism, was adjudged the winner of the competition.
Apart from the student entries, Pulitzer award winning photographs were also shown to enlighten the students on the qualities of a good photojournalist.
